Well at the beginning of the scout year at the Venture Scout planning meeting the CHA was the one event everyone wanted. An event designed as an introduction to Venture Scouts to a Venture type challenge, seen in both the “Venture Scout Challenge” and the “Explorer Belt".
Pairs of Venture Scouts to be dropped off at distances of 25 Km as the crow flies from a central finishing point and over the two and a bit days they had to make their way to the central point while completing a log of their journey and complete a number of projects as they progressed.
|
In the end no Venture Scouts accepted the challenge, however two senior scouts did, Jason Dineen, 42nd Limerick (Meelick) and Conor Ó Briain, 25th Limerick (Shannonbanks) decided to give it a go. At 23:00hrs on Friday 5 March the pair were dropped at Knocknalappa (447 686 OS Sheet 58) basically a boreen off the Newmarket on Fergus road to Sixmilebridge. They had been told to prepare for 3 days "on the ground". At they drop off point they were given Sheet 58, a grid reference to get to (NWAC, Killaloe) and a set of 3 projects, a compulsory one on historical monuments on route and 1 of two optional projects on either Willie O'Dea T.D. hero or villian or a regional Council to replace Limerick and Clare County and City councils. They chose Willie O'Dea to which they concluded after much discussion with the people on route that Willie is a Hero.
They took Broadford as their 2nd night stopover. The pair arrived into Killaloe at 16:00 hrs tired but highly satisfied at a job well done.

Skills Training

Our Scout County Skills Sharing Days took place in Castleconnell Camp site on Saturday 27th February and Sunday 28th February last. The weather which was pre ordered added to the days activities and even brought some back for a second day. Over 50 scouters in total from various groups within our scout county turned up. Scouters were treated to the following Knots (giving them a brief outline and a practice session this was given by Dave Ryan), Fire Lighting (need I say more all left in “awe” at Ger Nevilles display), Tent Pitching (nothing like getting stuck in practice makes perfect so says Dave Bourke), Hiking (not only did all that equipment arrive with Morgan O Sullivan it left with him too nothing unusual there), Map & Compass (No one got lost so well done Dennis Murray), Computing and Photography (Pat kept an eye on all and was there for all those photo opportunities), Turks Head Woggles (now that’s a different story Ashling McInerney says there were a few sore thumbs and I am surprised not sore bums as some did sit for a while trying to master it), Administration what can I say except it was Mags O Riordan. My sincere “Thanks” to all involved in making the days a success from the Scouters who shared the skills, Castleconnell for providing the venue and to the scouters who turned up. If one person went away with something they learned on the day I believe it was worth having been there to witness it I believe they did.

LSC Scouts visit Navalbase with Mid-west Sea Scout SIG
 |
Scouts from Limerick Scout County visited the Navalbase in Haulbowline, Co. Cork recently as part of a week-end organised by the Mid-west Sea Scout Special Interest Group (SIG). The scouts stayed with the 4th Cork (Cobh) Sea Scouts on the Saturday night and took the morning launch to the Navalbase. The ey received a tour of the naval basin on the launch and a tour of the base facilities on foot. Lunch was provided in the Naval mess before the group took the launch back to Cobh.
